Reflect: Understanding the Legacy Before Rewriting It
Why Reflect?
Before we can parent differently, we must understand what shaped us. The Reflect phase invites you to pause and look beneath the surface of daily parenting struggles. It's where we begin to uncover the inherited beliefs, relationship patterns, and survival strategies passed down—often without words—from one generation to the next.
This phase isn't about blame; it's about awareness. By exploring our own histories, we can identify the roots of our reactions and begin to make conscious choices that align with our values and aspirations as parents.
Key Objectives of the Reflect Phase
-
Understand the impact of Trauma: Identify the possible outcomes of trauma on your emotions, thoughts, behaviour, and parenting.
-
Recognize Inherited Patterns: Identify the legacy scripts influencing your reactions, such as beliefs like "Children should be seen and not heard" or "If I don't stay in control, everything will fall apart."
-
Understand Family Dynamics: Explore the family dynamics, attachment styles, and emotional rules you inherited, and how they impact your current parenting.
-
Acknowledge Systemic Influences: Consider how systemic and cultural contexts—such as racism, colonization, or poverty—have shaped your family's experiences and narratives.
-
Build Reflective Capacity: Develop the ability to observe and understand your emotional responses, fostering greater self-awareness and intentionality in your parenting.
Practical Tools and Exercises
To support your journey through the Reflect phase, consider engaging with the following exercises:
-
Legacy Mapping: Create a genogram or family tree highlighting patterns of behaviour, trauma, and resilience across generations.
-
Reflective Journaling: Use prompts to explore your experiences of being parented, your emotional triggers, and the values you wish to uphold.
-
Storytelling Circles: Share and listen to family stories to uncover unspoken narratives and gain insight into your family's emotional landscape.
-
Psychoeducation: Learn about trauma, attachment, and the intergenerational transmission of beliefs to contextualize your experiences.
Moving Forward
Reflection isn't about perfect recall or absolute clarity. It's about slowing down, getting curious, and gently asking:
Where did this response come from? What am I carrying that was never mine to hold?
This is the first—and most courageous—step toward parenting with intention. As you continue through the R.E.P.A.I.R.™ Framework, the insights gained here will serve as a foundation for empowerment, practice, alignment, integration, and ultimately, reclaiming your family's legacy.
